REGISTRAR AND Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, on Friday dismissed the speculation of a stalemate in the admission of fresh students into universities across the country. Oloyede, who spoke during an interview with journalists shortly after a visit to the zonal office of the board in Benin, the Edo State capital, insisted that all universities have been barred from conducting written examinations before admitting students. He also denied the alleged imposition of prospective students on universities, adding that issues over the admission of fresh students into tertiary institutions had been resolved after due consultations with all stakeholders. Some Vice-Chancellors and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have rejected the decision of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to peg admission cut-off mark at 120 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education. ASUU said the action, which it described as a “sad policy decision,” was in tandem “with the dream of the present government to destroy public universities in the country.” Most of the vice-chancellors interviewed on the issue maintained that they would not lower admission standards in their respective varsities. The vice-chancellors stated that the decision would add no value to the nation’s university system. Rather than criticisms, JAMB said Nigerians should be concerned about how to address the flight of citizens in glorified secondary schools called foreign Universities in places like country Ghana, Uganda, Gambia and others. “It is expedient to state here that the worst admitted cut-off mark in a Nigerian institution is far better than allowing them to fly out to some of the institution they are attending out there which we all know are nothing to be proud of”, JAMB said. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has recently released the latest cutoff mark for Universities, Polytechnics in nigeria. This was done after the general metting held last week. They advise candidates who couldn't meet up with the latest cutoff, to go to a less competitive place.
